Shockwave Therapy in Annandale, Virginia

Persistent heel or tendon pain can make the first steps of the morning painful, turn a workday into a physical struggle, and keep you from walking, lifting, running, or training. When rest, stretching, footwear, medicine, or earlier treatment provide limited relief, you may start wondering whether the pain will ever improve. At Health Builders, we provide shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis and persistent tendon pain, using acoustic pressure waves to stimulate the affected tissue and help reduce the pain that is keeping you from walking, working, exercising, or training comfortably.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Musculoskeletal pain can change how you move through the day. Plantar Fasciitis can make the first steps after rest feel sharp and intense. Tendon pain can return every time you grip, lift, climb stairs, run, or train. After weeks or months of planning around the same pain, you may feel frustrated, less capable, and afraid that ordinary activity will keep getting harder.

Shockwave Therapy, also called extracorporeal shock wave therapy, uses controlled acoustic pulses delivered through a handheld applicator. The pulses are directed at the painful area to create a local biological response that can reduce pain and improve function in certain musculoskeletal conditions. At Health Builders, we ask when your pain began, examine the area, review prior treatment and imaging, and explain whether Shockwave Therapy, rehabilitation, imaging, referral, or another treatment should be part of your plan.

How Shockwave Therapy Works at Health Builders

Your appointment begins with the pain and physical limits bringing you to our clinic. We examine the painful area, explain why Shockwave Therapy is being recommended, and make sure you understand the treatment before it begins.

01

We Ask Where the Pain Is and What Brings It Back

We ask when the pain began, how often it returns, which movements bring it back, and how it affects work, walking, exercise, or sport. Bring any imaging and treatment records connected with the painful area.

02

We Examine the Painful Area

We check movement, tenderness, strength, and the exact task that reproduces the pain. We explain when imaging, specialist care, or another treatment option should be used instead.

03

We Explain Why Shockwave Therapy Is Recommended

Before treatment begins, we explain the target area, what the pulses may feel like, and what Shockwave Therapy is intended to do. You can ask any questions you might have to our care team and then choose whether to proceed.

04

We Prepare the Treatment Area

We position the painful area carefully, identify the treatment target, and apply gel so the applicator can deliver pulses safely through your skin and help alleviate pain. We begin with settings chosen for the device, body area, and treatment plan.

05

We Deliver Controlled Acoustic Pulses

The applicator delivers rapid pulses to the treatment area. We stay in communication with you and adjust the intensity within the treatment plan when the sensation becomes too strong.

06

We Explain Activity and Progress Checks

We explain which activities can continue, which movements need temporary limits, and when to return. We track changes in walking, standing, grip, work tasks, exercise, or sport.

Conditions Shockwave Therapy Can Help With

Shockwave Therapy is used for specific musculoskeletal problems after the painful area has been examined. These four conditions and problem groups have the strongest combination of Health Builders relevance, patient demand, and current evidence.

Sports Injuries and Overuse Pain

Overuse pain can interrupt training, sport, and active work even when no single injury caused it. We examine the painful area and explain whether Shockwave Therapy, rehabilitation, imaging, or another treatment should be part of your care.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis can cause sharp heel pain during the first steps of the morning or after sitting. Standing through work, walking through a store, and returning to exercise can become difficult. Shockwave Therapy can reduce pain and improve foot function for persistent plantar heel pain.

Tennis Elbow

Tennis Elbow can make gripping, carrying, typing, lifting, and recreation painful. Shockwave Therapy targets the painful tendon area around the outside of the elbow and can improve pain and function over time.

Tendonitis and Tendinopathy

Tendon pain can return during lifting, reaching, climbing stairs, running, or repeated work. Shockwave Therapy can help reduce pain in certain persistent tendon conditions. The diagnosis, tendon involved, and treatment plan guide the recommendation.

How Shockwave Therapy Can Help You in Daily Life

Persistent heel, tendon, or elbow pain can make ordinary parts of your day harder. Shockwave therapy is used to reduce pain and improve function in the conditions we treat. As your symptoms improve, the difference can show up in how you walk, work, exercise, and move through your day.

Walk and Stand With Less Pain

Heel and tendon pain can make your first steps in the morning, errands, commuting, and long periods on your feet difficult. Reducing pain can make walking and standing easier as your treatment progresses.

Handle Work and Household Responsibilities

Pain with lifting, gripping, reaching, or climbing stairs can interfere with your job and the things you need to do at home. Improving pain and movement can make it easier to carry groceries, use your hands, climb stairs, and get through your day.

Return to Exercise, Running, and Sports

Recurring heel, tendon, or elbow pain can keep you from running, lifting, training, or playing a sport. Shockwave therapy can help reduce pain and improve function as you work toward returning to the activities you want to do again.

Move Without Bracing for Pain

When the same movement hurts again and again, you can start avoiding it before the pain begins. As pain improves, everyday movement can feel easier and you can begin using the affected foot, tendon, or elbow more normally again.

Ready to Discuss Shockwave Therapy?

Persistent pain can take you away from walking, work, exercise, and the activities you want to keep doing. At Health Builders, we examine the painful area, explain whether Shockwave Therapy should be part of your treatment, and provide activity guidance based on your condition.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Shockwave Therapy

Knowing how treatment works can help you prepare for the appointment and understand what you may feel during and after Shockwave Therapy.

Before Your Appointment

Complete your forms at least 48 hours before your appointment. Bring recent imaging, treatment records, and a list of medicines and supplements. Tell us about blood-thinning medicines, a bleeding disorder, pregnancy, an active infection, recent injections, or implanted devices. Wear clothing that gives access to the painful area.

During Your Appointment

You will be positioned so the painful area is supported. Gel is placed on the skin, and a handheld applicator delivers rapid pulses to the treatment area. You may feel tapping, pressure, warmth, or discomfort. We communicate with you throughout the session and adjust the intensity based on how you are feeling and your comfort level.

After Your Appointment

Temporary soreness, redness, bruising, swelling, or numbness can occur. We explain when you can return to work, walking, exercise, or sport and how rehabilitation should continue. Contact our clinic for worsening pain, new weakness, persistent numbness, or signs of infection.

Shockwave Therapy Visits, Cost, Insurance, and Medicare

Shockwave Therapy planning includes treatment time, number of visits, progress checks, cost, and coverage. Review these details before beginning treatment.

Visit Frequency and Progress

Active treatment commonly lasts about 10 to 30 minutes. Many musculoskeletal plans begin with three to five visits, often about one week apart. The diagnosis, body area, device, and response determine the final course and the point when progress is reviewed.

Shockwave Therapy Cost

Our office will explain the current shockwave therapy fee, what the price includes, and whether package pricing is available before you schedule. Payment is due at the time of service.

Insurance and Medicare

Dr. Fuller participates with Medicare, and Health Builders submits Medicare claims for eligible covered services he provides. Shockwave therapy coverage depends on the procedure and Medicare’s coverage rules. Our team will explain the current fee, billing process, and superbill options before treatment.

Questions About Shockwave Therapy?

Persistent heel or tendon pain can make every day harder. Tell us where the pain is, how long it has been there, what brings it back, and which treatments you have tried. Our team can answer questions about your appointment, current fees, insurance, Medicare, and what Shockwave Therapy feels like.

Can Shockwave Therapy Cause Damage?

Shockwave Therapy can cause temporary soreness, redness, bruising, swelling, or numbness. Serious injury is uncommon when the diagnosis, treatment area, device settings, and safety screening are appropriate.

Treatment areas with an active infection, tumor, open growth plate, major bleeding risk, or vulnerable nerves and blood vessels require another plan. A suspected tendon rupture, fracture, neurologic problem, or serious injury also requires further examination before treatment.

Tell our team about blood-thinning medicines, recent injections, pregnancy, implanted devices, new weakness, numbness, or a sudden loss of function. We examine the painful area and explain when imaging or specialist care should come first.

Shockwave Therapy can feel uncomfortable. Most patients describe rapid tapping, pressure, warmth, or a repeated pulsing sensation. Discomfort changes with the body area, tissue sensitivity, treatment intensity, and distance from bone.

The sensation should remain tolerable. We communicate with you during the appointment and adjust the intensity within the treatment plan when the discomfort becomes too strong.

Temporary soreness can continue after the session. Redness, bruising, or swelling can also occur. Tell us when you have a low pain tolerance, fear treatment pain, or previously had a difficult procedure so the treatment experience can be explained before it begins.

Many musculoskeletal treatment plans use three to five Shockwave Therapy visits, often about one week apart. Some conditions and protocols use a different number.

Your treatment course depends on the diagnosis, body area, device, how long the pain has been present, prior treatment, and how your symptoms respond. Plantar Fasciitis, Tennis Elbow, and other tendon conditions should not be given one universal schedule.

Progress should be measured through a specific activity, such as first-step heel pain, standing through work, grip strength, lifting, running, or training. We explain the starting course and when progress will be reviewed before treatment begins.

Activity after Shockwave Therapy depends on the diagnosis and treatment area. Walking and routine daily activity may continue for some conditions. Running, jumping, heavy lifting, or another movement that repeatedly increases pain may need a temporary reduction.

Shockwave Therapy is often combined with a gradual loading or rehabilitation program. Loading means placing a controlled amount of work through the tendon or tissue so it can build strength and tolerate activity again.

Follow the activity instructions given for your condition. Contact our clinic for a sharp increase in pain, new weakness, persistent numbness, or a sudden loss of movement after treatment.

Focused Shockwave Therapy concentrates energy at a defined target and can reach deeper tissue. Radial pressure wave treatment delivers its strongest pressure near the applicator and spreads outward through a wider area.

The systems use different methods, energy measurements, applicators, and treatment protocols. Current comparative research shows different results according to the condition and outcome being measured.

The diagnosis, tissue depth, body area, and operator training guide the choice between focused and radial treatment. The exact device also affects the settings, sensation, session plan, and evidence that applies to the treatment.

Many commercial insurance plans classify Shockwave Therapy as a self-pay service or restrict coverage to specific diagnoses and policies. Ask your plan whether the procedure code is covered, whether medical necessity rules apply, and what you would owe.

Medicare coverage depends on the applicable contractor policy. Provider participation and procedure coverage are separate billing questions.

Dr. Fuller participates with Medicare. Shockwave Therapy coverage still follows the procedure policy. Call our office before treatment so we can explain the current fee, billing process, and superbill options.
