Fatigue, poor sleep, brain fog, digestive changes, pain, or several symptoms at once can interfere with work, parenting, exercise, meals, and the rest of your day. At Health Builders, we use functional medicine to look for contributing factors, decide which testing is medically useful, and build treatment around the health problems affecting you.
What Is Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine is a medical care model that examines how symptoms, diagnoses, medicines, nutrition, sleep, movement, stress, and other contributing factors may relate to the problem being treated. It can be useful when fatigue, digestive symptoms, poor sleep, brain fog, pain, headaches, hormone changes, or several symptoms at once are interfering with daily life. Testing is chosen for a specific purpose, with results tied to a treatment, monitoring, or referral decision.
At Health Builders, we use your medical history, examination, existing results, and targeted testing to guide your care. Treatment can include medicine changes, nutrition, sleep, movement, changes to supplements, hormone treatment, IV nutrition, chiropractic care, acupuncture, or specialist care when our team recommends them. We explain what we recommend and why, then review your symptoms, results, side effects, and treatment response during later visits.

How Functional Medicine Works at Health Builders
A functional medicine appointment uses your symptoms, medical history, examination, existing results, and testing when needed to build a medical treatment plan.
01
You Meet With Our Care Team
Tell us which symptoms are affecting you, when they began, how often they occur, and what makes them better or worse. We also ask which parts of sleep, work, meals, movement, exercise, or family life have become harder.
02
We Analyze Your Medical Records
Bring recent laboratory results, imaging, specialist notes, hospital records, and prior diagnoses connected with the problems you want help with. We use those records to see what has already been established and which information still affects treatment.
03
We Review Your Medicines, Supplements, and Past Treatment
Bring the medicines, supplements, and treatments you currently use or have tried before. We ask what helped, what caused side effects, and what became difficult to continue. We also look for medicine and supplement combinations that may affect your care.
04
We Complete an Examination
We examine you based on the symptoms and health problems bringing you in. Depending on what you need help with, we may check areas such as your heart, lungs, abdomen, joints, movement, strength, or other parts of your health that can help us understand what is happening.
05
We Order Testing When Needed
We review the results you already have before ordering more. Blood work, urine testing, imaging, or specialty testing may be useful when the result can help explain your symptoms, change treatment, guide monitoring, or show that another specialist should become involved.
06
We Explain Your Treatment Plan
We explain what we recommend and why. Your plan can include medicine changes, nutrition, sleep, movement, changes to supplements, hormone treatment, IV nutrition, chiropractic care, acupuncture, or specialist care when our team recommends them. You receive written instructions for what happens after the visit.
When to Schedule a Functional Medicine Appointment
Schedule an appointment when symptoms keep returning, test results have left important questions unanswered, or treatments from different sources have become hard to manage. A functional medicine appointment can help you understand which problems need medical treatment, which tests are useful, and when specialist care is needed.
Several Symptoms Are Affecting Different Parts of Your Day
Fatigue can make work or parenting harder. Poor sleep can make the next day harder. Digestive symptoms can change meals and travel. Pain or brain fog can reduce exercise, focus, and social plans. An appointment is useful when several symptoms are affecting your day and you need medical care that accounts for them together.
Test Results Have Not Explained Why You Feel Unwell
A normal or inconclusive result can leave you wondering whether an important medical cause was missed. We review what your existing results show and decide whether another examination, standard test, imaging study, or specialist referral could add useful information.
Medicines, Supplements, and Advice Have Become Hard to Manage
Prescriptions, supplements, diets, and recommendations from different sources can add cost, side effects, and confusion. Schedule an appointment when you are unsure what still serves a purpose or whether two recommendations work safely together. We review the medicines and supplements you take and explain what to continue, change, or discuss with the prescribing clinician.
You Have Tried Several Treatments and Still Feel Unwell
Medicines, supplements, diet changes, therapy, or other treatment can take time and money without resolving the symptoms that interfere with your day. We review your response to earlier treatment and use that information to decide what to continue, what to change, and whether testing or referral is needed.

“I wasn’t feeling well and had the pleasure of being seen and treated by Dr Kim, she was nice, patient and very knowledgeable about my condition, made me feel heard and wasn’t in a rush to get rid of me and off to her next patient. She discussed with me in detail about receiving further treatment and referred me to Dr Fuller. He was amazing!”
Claudia Peralta-Monterrosa
“Dr’s Kim and Fuller have decades of experience and knowledge. They truly listen to their patients and customize treatment accordingly. I’m currently being treated for chronic shoulder pain there and Dr Fuller has been using a variety of treatments that are working after only 2 sessions, so I can sleep without throbbing shoulder pain. I highly recommend their practice!”
Connie VanZandt

Doctor Kim and Doctor Fuller and Bianca are attentive to one’s needs and focus on listening and accompanying one on their healing journey. What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Appointment
Your first appointment gives us time to understand what you need help with and begin working through the information that can guide your care. A little preparation helps us use that time well, and you will leave knowing what we recommend and what happens after your visit.
Before Your Appointment
Complete your forms and bring your current medicines and supplements, recent laboratory results, imaging, specialist notes, and other records related to the symptoms you want help with. Write down your main questions and anything important about when your symptoms began or how they affect your day.
During Your Appointment
We talk with you about your symptoms, health history, medicines, supplements, prior treatment, and the parts of daily life your health is affecting. We examine you, discuss what we see, and explain whether treatment, testing, imaging, or referral would be useful.
After Your Appointment
You receive instructions for what comes next. Depending on your care, that may include treatment, testing, medicine or supplement changes, another appointment, or a referral. During later visits, we review how you are doing and adjust your care when needed.
Ongoing Care, Costs and Insurance
Functional medicine care can include future appointments, testing, treatment changes, and referrals. Our care team can explain to you more how ongoing care will work, which costs can arise, and how insurance and Medicare apply.
Functional Medicine Costs
Current new-patient medical appointment fees are listed in our general FAQs. Laboratory work, imaging, prescriptions, supplements, and outside specialist care can create separate charges. Our team explains additional costs before you schedule testing or treatment.
Ongoing Functional Medicine Care
Later appointments give us time to review changes in your symptoms, test results, and how your treatment is working. We can adjust your treatment plan, discuss additional testing when needed, and decide when another specialist should be involved. The timing of future visits depends on what we are treating and how your care changes over time.

Questions About Functional Medicine?
If fatigue, poor sleep, digestive symptoms, brain fog, pain, or several health changes are affecting your day, call or send us a message. Our team can answer questions about functional medicine and current appointment options.
Is Functional Medicine Legitimate and Evidence-Based?
Functional medicine at Health Builders uses established medical tools. These include your medical history, physical examination, standard laboratory testing, medicines, nutrition, sleep, movement, and specialist referrals. Our team connects each test and recommendation to the medical question being addressed.
We use the evidence for the specific diagnosis, test, medicine, supplement, or treatment under consideration. We explain what the recommendation is intended to accomplish, how progress will be reviewed, and when another clinician should be involved. Functional medicine also works within our broader approach of combining conventional medical care with other treatment options.
How much does functional medicine cost?
New patient medical appointments at Health Builders are priced by provider and appointment length. Dr. Kim’s initial appointments are $500 for 90 minutes or $405 for 75 minutes. Andrea Kubota, FNP-BC, offers initial appointments for $425 for 90 minutes or $345 for 75 minutes. Our team will tell you which appointment length to schedule when you contact us. Laboratory work, imaging, prescriptions, supplements, and outside specialist care can create separate costs.
What Tests Do Functional Medicine Doctors Use?
Functional medicine doctors use blood tests, urine tests, imaging, and specialty tests selected for the condition being investigated. At Health Builders, we begin with the results you already have and order the testing needed to guide treatment, monitor progress, or decide whether a referral is needed.
The exact tests depend on your symptoms, examination, medicines, family history, and prior results. Testing can address questions involving blood counts, thyroid function, blood sugar, nutrient levels, hormones, digestion, infection, or another medical concern. Our team explains the purpose of each test and how the result will affect your care.
Do I Need Specialty Testing Before My First Functional Medicine Appointment?
Bring the laboratory results, imaging, and specialist notes you already have. Order new specialty testing before your appointment only when our team has asked you to. We first decide whether your existing information is enough and whether another test would change treatment, monitoring, or referral.
This keeps testing tied to a specific medical purpose and helps you spend money on tests that can affect a medical decision.
Does Insurance Cover Functional Medicine, and How Does Medicare Apply?
Medical appointments with Dr. Hai Jin Kim and Andrea Kubota, FNP-BC are out of network with private insurance. We provide superbills for out-of-network private insurance. Dr. Kim has opted out of Medicare, and Andrea is out of network with Medicare.
Laboratory work, imaging, prescriptions, and outside specialist care have separate coverage rules. Review your plan’s benefits and ask our team about the current payment process before your appointment.
Will I Need Supplements or a Restrictive Diet?
Supplements and diet changes are recommended only when they serve a specific medical purpose.
We explain what each recommendation is intended to address, how long to follow it, and what side effects or medicine interactions to watch for. Some plans include supplements or food changes. Other plans focus on medical treatment, testing, sleep, movement, or specialist care.
How is Functional Medicine Different From Integrative Medicine and Primary Care?
Functional medicine gives us more time to organize persistent symptoms, prior testing, medicines, and treatment questions.
Integrative Medicine describes the broader way we combine conventional medical care with selected complementary options.
Integrative Primary and Family Care covers ongoing primary care, preventive care, acute concerns, medicine management, and continuity.
We help you choose the appointment type that matches the care you need.
