What is Integrative Medicine?

Feeling sick can affect every part of your day. Pain can limit movement. Fatigue can make work and family responsibilities harder. Poor sleep can make everything feel worse. You may have seen several doctors, tried treatments, or completed tests and still feel far from the life you want. Rushed or dismissive appointments can leave you angry, exhausted, and afraid that you will keep feeling this way. Losing hope can become as painful as the symptoms themselves.

Integrative medicine combines conventional medical care with selected complementary treatments. At Health Builders, we ask about your symptoms, past diagnoses, medicines, supplements, test results, daily habits, and treatments you have tried. We complete an examination when needed. We then recommend the treatment option, testing, referral, or ongoing care that best supports your health. You receive personal, physician-led care from a team that takes your health seriously, explains each recommendation, and creates a clear treatment plan focused on helping you feel and function better.

How Integrative Medicine Works at Health Builders

Your appointment begins when you meet with our care team. We discuss the symptoms, medical information, and decisions bringing you to our clinic. We then explain the best path forward.

01

You Meet With Our Care Team

We ask what brought you in and what you need help with. Tell us when your symptoms began, how often they happen, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect sleep, work, movement, and family life.

02

We Analyze Your Medical Records

Bring recent lab results, imaging reports, specialist notes, hospital records, and information about past surgeries or treatment. We use them to understand what has already been found and what has already been tried.

03

We Review Your Medicines, Supplements, and Past Treatment

Bring a list of your medicines, supplements, allergies, side effects, and treatments you have tried. We look for possible interactions and repeated treatments.

04

We Complete an Examination When Needed

We ask about past diagnoses, surgeries, injuries, and family medical history. We examine you when your symptoms or treatment choices require it.

05

We Recommend the Best Treatment Option

We use your symptoms, examination, records, and test results to recommend the best treatment option for your needs. We explain whether treatment can begin or whether testing or a referral should come first.

06

We Explain What Happens Next

Before you leave, we explain your treatment plan, written instructions, records or tests to obtain, and when to return. We also explain when another doctor or specialist should be involved.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Primary Care Appointment

Preparing your medical information and questions helps our care team understand your health and use your appointment time well.

Before Your Appointment

Complete your forms at least 48 hours before your appointment. Bring your medicines, supplements, allergy information, past diagnoses, recent test results, imaging reports, specialist notes, and treatments you have tried. Write down the symptoms and questions you want to discuss.

During Your Appointment

We talk about your symptoms, health history, medicines, supplements, previous care, and health goals. We complete an examination when needed. We then explain the treatment, testing, referral, or ongoing care we recommend.

After Your Appointment

We give you written instructions and explain any records, tests, referrals, treatments, or later appointments. You will know what to do after your appointment, when to return, and how we will review changes in your health.

Integrative Medicine Costs, Insurance, and Appointment Options

We publish our medical appointment fees and explain payment policies before you schedule. Our office can help you choose your appointment and understand the billing rules connected with the doctor or nurse practitioner you see.

Choosing Your Appointment

Medical appointment prices depend on the visit type and length. Our office will explain which appointment applies to your age, symptoms, and reason for scheduling. The full medical fee table appears on our integrative primary and family care page.

Insurance and Superbills

We are out of network for integrative medical care and do not submit insurance claims. Eligible non-Medicare patients can receive a superbill. Your insurance plan decides whether out-of-network reimbursement applies. Payment is due at the time of service.

Medicare and Provider Status

Dr. Kim has opted out of Medicare. Andrea Kubota is out of network for Medicare. Call our office before scheduling so we can explain current provider-specific Medicare rules and what you will owe.

Call our clinic when medicines, supplements, test results, or recommendations from several sources leave you unsure what to do first. Our office can answer scheduling questions and help you request an integrative medicine appointment in Annandale.

How Is Integrative Medicine Different From Functional Medicine?

Integrative medicine is the broader approach. It combines conventional medical care with selected complementary treatments and considers factors such as nutrition, sleep, movement, stress, medicines, and supplements when they affect your health.

Functional medicine is a more focused approach often used for persistent or overlapping symptoms. It takes a detailed look at your health history, daily habits, environment, and possible contributors to your symptoms. Testing may be used when the results could change your treatment.

At Health Builders, we use integrative medicine as the overall care model. Functional medicine provides a deeper review for patients with long-lasting or difficult-to-understand symptoms.

An integrative medicine doctor provides medical care and considers complementary treatments when they are appropriate for your health. Depending on the doctor’s specialty and training, they can examine you, diagnose conditions, prescribe medicines, order tests, and refer you to specialists.

The doctor may also discuss nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress, supplements, acupuncture, and other treatments that relate to your symptoms. The term holistic doctor can refer to several types of practitioners, so check the person’s medical license, credentials, and training.

At Health Builders, physician-led integrative care begins with an in-depth history and an examination before testing is ordered when needed.

Primary care is ongoing medical care. A primary care doctor handles routine checkups, preventive care, new symptoms, chronic conditions, prescriptions, testing, referrals, and care over time.

Integrative medicine describes how care is provided. It combines conventional medical care with selected complementary treatments. A patient can receive primary care through an integrative medical practice.

At Health Builders, integrative primary and family care is for patients who want an ongoing medical relationship. Integrative medicine also includes functional medicine, pediatric care, and specific treatments available through our clinic.

Choose integrative primary and family care when you want ongoing checkups, preventive care, help with new symptoms, chronic condition care, medicines, testing, and referrals.

Yes! Complementary treatments are used alongside medical care. The safest combination depends on the treatment, your diagnoses, your medicines, your supplements, and other health factors.

Supplements can change how medicines work. Acupuncture, injections, physical treatments, and other therapies also have their own risks and safety limits. Tell every doctor about all medicines, supplements, and treatments you use.

At Health Builders, we review this information before recommending care. We also explain when testing, prescription care, or another specialist should be involved.

Yes. Integrative medicine can be evidence based when each recommendation is evaluated for the specific treatment, condition, patient, and goal.

The evidence can be strong, mixed, limited, or absent depending on the treatment and the reason it is being used. Safety also varies. A treatment described as natural still requires careful review because supplements and complementary therapies can cause side effects or interact with medicines.

A sound integrative medicine plan considers medical research, your health history, examination findings, current medicines, risks, treatment goals, and your response over time. At Health Builders, we review those details before recommending a treatment plan.
