Chronic pain can affect you from the moment you wake up until you try to sleep. It can wake you at night, make work and responsibilities at home harder, and leave your family carrying more of the load. When you need help with tasks you once handled yourself, you may feel like a burden and fear that the pain will keep controlling your life. At Health Builders, we provide acupuncture care in Annandale and explain how acupuncture can help reduce pain and make daily movement easier.
What Is Acupuncture?
Persistent pain can slowly take control of your entire day. You may wake each time you roll over, then begin the morning already exhausted. Tasks you once handled without thinking may fall to your spouse or family. Work becomes harder. Exercise disappears. Walking, standing, or sitting can feel like a calculation about how much pain you can tolerate. As your world becomes smaller, you may feel dependent, guilty, and afraid that this is simply how your life will remain.
Acupuncture uses very thin needles placed at selected points for a period of time. At Health Builders, we begin your care with time to explain where you hurt, what has changed, and what you want your body to handle again. We examine the painful area, explain why acupuncture care is being recommended, and answer your questions before treatment begins. Care can begin during your first visit when we have enough information to treat you safely. We monitor how you feel during treatment and track changes in pain, sleep, movement, work, exercise, and daily responsibilities as care continues.

How Acupuncture Works at Health Builders
Your appointment begins with understanding the pain and deciding whether acupuncture should be part of your treatment. We explain each step before treatment begins and keep communication open while the needles are in place.
01
Tell Us How Pain Has Changed Your Life
Tell us where you hurt, how long the pain has been present, and what you have stopped doing. We ask how pain affects sleep, work, family responsibilities, exercise, and the routines that once felt ordinary. This gives your appointment a useful goal beyond lowering a pain score.
02
We Examine the Painful Area
Dr. Fuller examines the area and checks movement, strength, sensation, reflexes, or balance when those checks apply. He also reviews previous injuries, surgery, medicines, imaging, and treatment. These details help our care team determine whether acupuncture care can begin right away or whether another test or clinician should come first.
03
Explain the Treatment and Ask for Your Consent
We explain why acupuncture care is being recommended and what the appointment will involve. You can ask about needle placement, expected sensations, positioning, or another treatment option. Treatment begins only after you understand the recommendation and agree to proceed.
04
Help You Get Comfortable Before Treatment
We position you so the treatment area is accessible and your body feels supported. Tell us about needle fear, fainting, dizziness, blood concerns, or a past difficult experience. We can answer questions before needling begins and continue talking with you throughout the appointment.
05
Place the Needles and Explain What You May Feel
Thin needles are placed at selected points based on the concern being treated. You may feel a brief prick, pressure, warmth, tingling, heaviness, or a dull ache. Tell us immediately when a sensation feels sharp, intense, or upsetting so we can respond and ensure you continue to feel safe and comfortable.
06
Remove the Needles and Track What Changes
We monitor how you feel, remove the needles, and give instructions that apply after the appointment. As care continues, we compare your pain, sleep, walking, work, exercise, and daily responsibilities with your starting point. We change the recommendation when progress slows or another test, treatment, or clinician is needed.
Conditions Treated With Acupuncture at Health Builders
Acupuncture care can help reduce pain from several musculoskeletal conditions. We use your symptoms, examination, health history, and prior treatment to decide whether acupuncture should be used alone or with another treatment.
Chronic Low Back Pain
Low back pain that continues for months can affect sleep, sitting, standing, walking, work, and family life. Acupuncture care can help reduce pain and improve daily function when low back pain is chronic and has no specific medical cause. We also check for signs that imaging or another clinician is needed.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar Fasciitis can make the first steps of the morning feel severe and turn standing or walking into something you dread. Acupuncture care can help reduce persistent heel pain and make work, exercise, and daily movement easier. Your examination helps us decide whether acupuncture should be used alone or with another musculoskeletal treatment.
Joint and Muscle Pain
Pain from an injury, repetitive work, training, or restricted movement can affect several joints, muscles, and tendons at once. We examine the painful area and review how the problem affects work, exercise, and daily movement. We then explain whether acupuncture care or another musculoskeletal treatment should be part of your care.
Tendonitis and Tendinopathy
Tendon pain can return every time you grip, reach, lift, run, jump, or train. You may begin avoiding the movement because you expect the same pain to come back. We examine the painful area and ask which activities trigger it. Acupuncture care can reduce pain and make work, exercise, and daily movement easier.
How Acupuncture Care Can Help You Reclaim Daily Life
Chronic pain can take away sleep, independence, family time, work, and the activities that make you feel capable. Acupuncture care can help reduce pain, making these parts of daily life possible again.
Sleep Through Longer Stretches
Chronic pain can wake you every time you turn and keep you searching for a position that does not hurt. When that happens night after night, the lost sleep carries into the next day, leaving you stiff, exhausted, and less able to handle work or family responsibilities. By helping reduce pain, acupuncture care can make it possible to sleep for longer stretches, move more easily in bed, and begin the day with less stiffness.
Spend More Time With Your Family
Pain can keep you from playing with your child, joining family activities, or handling your share of work at home. As other people take over those responsibilities, guilt can grow and make you feel like a burden. Reducing pain through acupuncture care can make it easier to help at home, spend time with your family, and take part in the moments you have been missing.
Handle Work and Daily Responsibilities
Chronic pain can make sitting, standing, walking, lifting, and reaching harder throughout the day. The effort of working around that pain can drain your focus, slow you down, and leave you with little energy when you get home. With less pain, it becomes possible to handle more of your work, errands, chores, and daily responsibilities.
Enjoy Exercise, Hobbies, and an Active Life
Recurring pain makes you avoid movements and activities that repeatedly bring it back. As weeks or months pass, exercise, sports, travel, gardening, and other parts of your active life can disappear. Acupuncture care can reduce pain, making walking, exercise, recreation, and the activities you value possible again.

Patient Experiences With Health Builders
Living with pain for months or years can leave you tired of repeating the same story and wondering whether anyone understands how much your life has changed. These patients describe how our team listened, answered their questions, and supported them through care.
“As a board certified, licensed Acupuncturist, I routinely refer patients to both Dr. Fuller and Dr. Kim, and have been under the care of the two of them for a cervical disc herniation. People who suffer from chronic fatigue, endocrine disorders, autoimmune issues and general aches and pains can benefit from seeing one or both of these caring healthcare professionals. I highly recommend Dr. Kim for Prolozone and PRP (platelet rich plasma) therapies as well.”

What to Expect Before, During, and After Acupuncture
Knowing what will happen during your acupuncture appointment can make the experience feel less frightening. Before treatment begins, tell us about your medicines, pregnancy, bleeding problems, open wounds, skin infections, fainting, or any past reaction to needles.
Before Your Appointment
Bring your medicines, supplements, prior diagnoses, imaging, and treatment records related to the pain. Tell us about pregnancy, blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, open wounds, skin infections, implanted medical devices, needle fear, or a history of fainting. Ask our team whether you should eat before your visit, how much water to drink, and what clothing will allow access to the area being treated.
During Your Appointment
We explain the treatment and ask for your consent before placing any needles. You will be positioned so your body is supported and the treatment area can be reached. You may feel a brief prick, pressure, warmth, tingling, heaviness, or a dull ache. Tell us immediately if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, nausea, warmth, sweating, or faintness. We continue checking how you feel while the needles remain in place.
After Your Appointment
Temporary soreness, bruising, minor bleeding, dizziness, or lightheadedness can occur. Take your time standing and tell us how you feel before leaving. We explain any instructions for food, hydration, driving, work, exercise, or the treated area. Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, severe chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness, or another severe reaction. Contact our office for worsening pain, signs of infection, persistent numbness, or other concerns after your appointment.
Acupuncture Visits, Cost, Insurance, and Medicare
Acupuncture care can involve one appointment or a series of visits. The time, cost, and coverage depend on where the pain is, the treatment provided, and how your symptoms change.
New Patient Acupuncture Cost

Visit Frequency and Progress
Many acupuncture visits last about 30 to 60 minutes, with needles in place for part of that time. Your first visit may take longer for your history and examination. Visit frequency depends on your condition, response, and treatment goals.
Insurance and Medicare
Original Medicare Part B covers acupuncture only for qualifying chronic low back pain under specific rules. Health Builders submits eligible Medicare claims for covered services Dr. Fuller provides. Questions About Acupuncture?
Pain may be the reason you are here. Questions about needles may be on your mind. Tell us what pain has taken away and what worries you about treatment. We can explain the appointment, current fees, and Medicare questions before you decide.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture usually causes a brief prick or pressure as a thin needle enters the skin. You may also feel warmth, tingling, heaviness, or a dull ache around a point. A sharp or intense sensation should be reported immediately. The experience changes with the body area, needle depth, your sensitivity, and the technique used. You can speak throughout treatment and ask questions whenever a sensation concerns you.
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is generally considered safe when it is provided by a properly trained clinician using sterile, single-use needles. Temporary soreness, bruising, minor bleeding, fatigue, dizziness, or headache can occur. Serious complications are rare and can include infection or injury when needles are placed improperly. Pregnancy, bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medicines, skin infections, certain medical devices, and serious neurologic symptoms can change the treatment decision.
What if needles make me feel faint or anxious?
Tell us before treatment when needles, blood, pain, or medical procedures have caused fear, dizziness, or fainting. Anxiety can trigger sweating, nausea, warmth, lightheadedness, or a sudden drop in blood pressure. Positioning, communication, and early recognition can help us respond. Speak up as soon as you feel unwell. Treatment can be paused while we check how you are feeling and decide what should happen next.
How long are acupuncture needles left in, and how long is the appointment?
Many acupuncture appointments last about 30 to 60 minutes. The needles often remain in place for several minutes to about 20 minutes, depending on the treatment plan and body area. Your first visit can take longer because it includes a history and examination. We will tell you how much time is reserved when your appointment is scheduled.
How many acupuncture visits are needed?
The number of visits depends on the condition, how long it has been present, its severity, and your response. Some concerns are reviewed after a short series. Persistent pain may require a longer course. Your plan should include a point when pain, sleep, movement, work, and activity are compared with your starting point. Care should change or stop when progress is absent or your goals have been reached.
Does Medicare cover acupuncture?
Original Medicare Part B covers acupuncture only for qualifying chronic low back pain that has lasted at least 12 weeks and meets Medicare’s other criteria. Medicare allows up to 12 visits in 90 days, with up to 8 additional visits when improvement is documented, for no more than 20 visits in 12 months. Your deductible and coinsurance apply. Call Health Builders before scheduling because provider enrollment and billing arrangements determine whether the Medicare acupuncture benefit can be used here. Health Builders submits eligible Medicare claims for covered services Dr. Fuller provides. Your deductible and coinsurance apply.
