Understanding Hair Loss and Thinning Hair

Hair loss and thinning hair can appear as more shedding, a widening part, reduced density at the crown, changes around the temples or hairline, patchy areas, or more scalp showing through. Because your hair is part of how you recognize yourself, those changes can hit hard. You may feel older than you are, less attractive, embarrassed under bright lights, reluctant to be photographed, or self-conscious when you go out because you worry someone will notice. You may change your hairstyle to hide thinning areas or spend more time thinking about your hair every time you leave home.

Hair loss can develop for different reasons, including inherited thinning, illness, prolonged stress, pregnancy, menopause, medicines, and nutrition problems. Several forms of hair loss have treatment options. Health Builders offers PRP, hormone management, functional medicine, and integrative primary and family care for hair-loss questions where those treatments and care models apply. The goal is to address treatable contributors and use options that match the type of hair loss involved, giving you a genuine opportunity to improve the change affecting how you look and feel.

How Health Builders Evaluates Hair Loss and Chooses Treatment

Hair loss can have several causes, and treatment depends on the type of hair loss involved. We look at when the shedding began, where your hair is thinning, what we see during your hair and scalp examination, and which health factors may be connected before recommending treatment.

01

When Your Hair Loss Started

We ask when you first noticed extra shedding, a wider part, thinning at the crown or temples, patchy loss, or more scalp showing. We also ask whether the change happened suddenly or gradually and whether it began around an illness, prolonged stress, pregnancy, menopause, or a change in medicines.

02

What We See in Your Hair and Scalp

We examine your scalp, hair density, part width, hairline, breakage, irritation, scaling, and tenderness. Where the thinning appears and how the hair looks helps us narrow down the type of hair loss and which treatments make sense to discuss.

03

Health Factors That Can Affect Hair Growth

Medicines, supplements, nutrition, recent illness, pregnancy, postpartum changes, menopause, and other health conditions can affect hair growth. We review the factors that apply to you so treatment can address the issues connected with your shedding or thinning.

04

What We Recommend Next

After we review your hair, scalp, symptoms, and medical history, we explain which options we recommend. That can include PRP, hormone management, medical treatment, testing, or referral when appropriate. We also explain what changes to watch for and when we want to see you again.

Hair Loss Treatment Options at Health Builders

Hair loss treatment depends on the type of hair loss and what is contributing to it. Our clinic offers several treatment and medical care options for thinning and shedding. Each one addresses a different part of the problem.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma uses a concentrated portion of your own blood as a scalp treatment. PRP is used for some forms of pattern hair loss and can help improve hair density in some patients. The platelets release growth factors involved in tissue repair and hair-follicle activity. For thinning areas, PRP gives you a treatment option directed at the scalp itself when restoring visible density is part of your hair-loss treatment plan.

Hormone Management and Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

Hair growth can change around pregnancy, the postpartum period, perimenopause, menopause, and other hormone changes. Hormone management becomes relevant when thinning or shedding occurs alongside hormone-related symptoms. When a hormone problem is confirmed, treatment can address the hormone-related symptoms occurring with the hair change. Your hair loss may also need its own treatment.

Integrative Primary and Family Care

Hair loss can sometimes occur alongside medicines, recent illness, thyroid problems, nutritional deficiencies, or other health conditions. Integrative primary and family care gives you a place to address those medical issues alongside your hair loss. Our team reviews your health history, medicines, symptoms, and testing when needed so contributing health problems can be treated and your hair loss can receive its own treatment if needed.

Functional Medicine

Functional medicine looks at how nutrition, digestive health, prolonged stress, recent illness, medicines, supplements, and other health factors can contribute to symptoms. For hair loss, it can be useful when thinning appears alongside other changes in your health. Treatment can address contributing health problems that may also be connected with shedding or changes in hair growth.

Does PRP work for hair loss?

PRP has been shown to improve hair density in some patients with androgenetic alopecia, also called male or female pattern hair loss. Results vary among patients, and published studies use different preparation methods and treatment schedules. Your type of hair loss, follicle activity, health history, and treatment plan influence whether PRP deserves consideration. A 2024 systematic review and a separate 2024 meta-analysis both reported promising results while identifying variation across study methods.

PRP research has focused primarily on androgenetic alopecia, which includes male and female pattern hair loss. Pattern hair loss often appears as a widening part, reduced density at the top of the scalp, or gradual thinning over time. PRP has a smaller evidence base for other forms of hair loss, so identifying the type of hair loss remains important before treatment is selected. You can learn about Platelet-Rich Plasma by clicking here.

PRP for hair loss commonly costs about $850 to $1,500 per session in Northern Virginia and the DC area. Multi-session packages often cost about $2,500 to $3,000, although pricing varies by the treatment area, preparation method, provider, and number of sessions. Call us for our current PRP pricing and what your treatment fee includes.

Yes. Hair shedding or thinning can occur around pregnancy, the postpartum period, perimenopause, menopause, and other hormone-related changes. Hair loss can also be connected with inherited pattern loss, thyroid problems, iron deficiency, stress, medicines, autoimmune conditions, and other health issues. At Health Builders, we review your hair changes alongside your symptoms and medical history to determine whether hormone evaluation, hair-loss treatment, or another form of care belongs in your treatment plan.

Hair shedding refers to an increase in the amount of hair falling out. Hair loss often appears as a widening part, receding hairline, bald area, thinner ponytail, or a lasting reduction in density. Some people experience both at the same time. Recording when the change started and how it has progressed can help our care team understand the pattern.

Physical or emotional stress can trigger excessive hair shedding several months after the event. Common triggers include fever, illness, childbirth, major weight loss, surgery, or significant emotional strain. This type of shedding is often called telogen effluvium. Your timeline helps our care team understand whether a recent event may be connected with the change you are seeing.

Hair-growth supplements can be useful when a documented nutrient deficiency contributes to hair loss. Taking supplements without knowing what your body needs can expose you to excessive amounts of certain nutrients, and high levels of some nutrients have been linked with additional hair loss. Bring your current supplement list to your appointment so our care team can review it with your health history and available laboratory results.
