What Are Red Light Therapy and PEMF?

Red light therapy uses red and near-infrared light. Near-infrared light falls outside the range your eyes can see. Cells absorb part of the light, and that exposure can influence signaling connected with pain, local blood flow, inflammation, and tissue response.

PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. A PEMF device creates changing magnetic fields that produce small electrical effects in tissue. Those effects can influence nerve, muscle, and joint signaling connected with pain and movement.

At Health Builders, we deliver red light therapy with two PlatinumLED Pro panels mounted horizontally above the treatment table. Our standalone PEMF setup uses a HUGO Professional system with one full-body mat beneath you and a second mat above you. Each treatment has its own equipment, settings, safety questions, and treatment goals. Our care team will explain which treatment we recommend and what your appointment will include so you can feel safe and secure in your choice of treatment

How Red Light Therapy and PEMF Work

Red light therapy and PEMF deliver separate forms of energy. The Health Builders setups also position your body differently during each appointment.

01

PlatinumLED Pro Panels Deliver Light

Two PlatinumLED Pro panels are mounted above the treatment table. You lie beneath the panels while red and near-infrared light reach a broad treatment surface.

02

Cells Absorb Part of the Light

Structures inside cells absorb specific wavelengths. This can affect mitochondrial signaling. Mitochondria help cells produce energy. Light exposure can also influence nitric oxide, a molecule involved in blood-vessel widening and local blood flow.

03

Position and Time Affect the Light Exposure

The light reaching your body depends on panel output, treatment distance, body position, treatment time, and the size of the tissue being treated. We position you according to the body part and treatment goal.

04

HUGO Professional Delivers Full-Body PEMF

The HUGO Professional setup uses two connected full-body mats. One mat sits beneath you, and the other rests above you. This places your body between the pulsed electromagnetic fields.

05

PEMF Influences Nerve and Muscle Signaling

The changing electromagnetic field creates small electrical effects in tissue. These effects can influence nerve signaling, muscle activity, joint function, and how your body responds to movement.

06

The Program Changes What You Feel

HUGO Professional programs use brief electromagnetic pulses. The program and intensity affect the sensation. You may feel tapping, pulsing, tingling, or muscle contractions during treatment.

How Red Light Therapy and PEMF Differ

Red light therapy and PEMF can both support musculoskeletal care, and each affects your body differently. Red light therapy directs red and near-infrared light toward a joint, tendon, muscle, or other tissue. PEMF uses pulsed electromagnetic fields to influence nerve and muscle activity across a larger part of your body. Before recommending one to you we consider where you hurt, what movements have become difficult, how your symptoms respond to activity, and which safety factors apply.

Red Light Therapy

You lie beneath two PlatinumLED Pro panels while red and near-infrared light is directed toward the joint, tendon, muscle, heel, or other body part being treated. The light can influence cellular signaling, local circulation, pain response, and tissue activity. You may see bright light and feel mild warmth. Eye conditions, light-sensitive medicines, and products used on your skin require review before treatment.

PEMF Therapy

You lie between two full-body mats connected to the HUGO Professional system while pulsed electromagnetic fields reach your body from above and below. Depending on the program and intensity, you may feel tapping, tingling, pulsing, or muscle contractions. PEMF can be useful when pain, stiffness, muscle tension, or slow recovery affects several movements or a larger part of your body. Pacemakers, implanted electronic devices, seizures, and other health factors require safety review.

What Red Light Therapy Is Used to Treat

Red light therapy is used in musculoskeletal care for pain, stiffness, tendon symptoms, joint symptoms, and recovery after physical activity. The device position, light exposure, and treatment course need to match the body part and condition.

Muscle Soreness and Sports Recovery

Red light therapy can reduce muscle soreness after exercise or physical strain. With less soreness, it can be easier to resume training, work, and daily activity as you recover.

Red Light Therapy Benefits for Pain and Muscle Recovery

Red light therapy can influence cellular signaling in the tissue exposed to the panels. The treatment is used to support pain reduction, muscle recovery, movement, and local circulation.

Support Local Circulation

Red and near-infrared light can influence nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps blood vessels widen and can increase local blood flow around the tissue exposed to the panels.

Support Muscle Recovery

Red light therapy can reduce soreness after exercise or physical strain in some protocols. This can make it easier to resume training, work, and daily responsibilities during recovery.

Help Ease Joint and Soft-Tissue Stiffness

Pain and stiffness can make you avoid movements that repeatedly hurt. Red light therapy can support local blood flow and tissue response, making gentle movement more comfortable.

Reduce Pain During Movement

Light exposure can influence inflammatory and pain signaling in the treated tissue. When pain decreases, walking, lifting, reaching, exercising, and sleeping can become easier.

What PEMF Therapy Is Used to Treat

PEMF is used in musculoskeletal care for pain, joint stiffness, low back symptoms, muscle activity, and physical recovery. The result depends on the device, field settings, program, body position, and condition being treated.

Joint Pain and Knee Osteoarthritis

PEMF can reduce pain and improve function in some knee osteoarthritis injuries. We ask how knee pain affects walking, stairs, sleep, work, and exercise before recommending treatment.

Muscle Soreness and Recovery

HUGO Professional PEMF creates pulsing that you can feel through the full-body mats. Depending on the program, the pulses can activate muscles and influence how your body responds after activity or physical strain.

PEMF Therapy Benefits for Pain, Sports, Exercise, and Recovery

HUGO Professional PEMF delivers pulsed electromagnetic fields through the full-body mats above and below you. Depending on the program and intensity, you may feel rhythmic pulsing or muscle contractions. PEMF can support pain relief, muscle activation, movement, and recovery when sports, exercise, work, or other physical demands leave you sore or stiff.

Reduce Pain During Activity

PEMF can influence nerve and tissue signaling connected with pain. Reducing that pain can make sitting, standing, walking, lifting, exercising, and other daily movement easier.

Support Muscle Activation

HUGO Professional PEMF can create rhythmic muscle contractions during treatment. These pulses activate muscle fibers and provide a controlled stimulus while you remain comfortably positioned between the mats.

Stay Active in Sports and Exercise

Recurring pain, soreness, or stiffness can interfere with training and make you cut workouts short. PEMF can support muscle comfort and movement as you continue exercise, rehabilitation, or participation in your sport.

Support Recovery After Physical Strain

Sports, exercise, demanding work, and other physical activity can leave your muscles sore and your movement limited. PEMF can support recovery by easing discomfort and helping your body move more comfortably afterward.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Red Light Therapy or PEMF

Knowing what to bring, how the equipment is positioned, and which symptoms to report can make your appointment easier to prepare for.

Before Your Appointment

Complete your new patient forms. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, skin products, eye conditions, past seizures, and implanted devices. Include pacemakers, pumps, cochlear implants, neurostimulators, and metal implants. Tell us where you hurt, when symptoms began, what brings them on, and which activities have become harder.

During Your Appointment

For red light therapy, you lie beneath two PlatinumLED Pro panels while we position the light over the body part being treated and explain eye protection. For PEMF, you lie between two full-body mats connected to the HUGO Professional system. Tell us immediately about eye discomfort, dizziness, unexpected pain, numbness, or tingling.

After Your Appointment

Red light therapy and PEMF generally involve little physical recovery. We ask how you feel before you leave and explain any limits on work, exercise, bathing, skin products, or other activities. Contact us for a lasting headache, eye symptoms, skin irritation, dizziness, unexpected pain, or symptoms that keep getting worse.

Red Light Therapy and PEMF Safety, Side Effects, and Who Should Avoid Them

Red light therapy and PEMF require separate safety checks. Tell us about every medicine, implant, eye condition, pregnancy, seizure, skin change, and recent illness before treatment. We review your information before your appointment. Call 911 or seek emergency care for severe chest pain, trouble breathing, loss of consciousness, sudden weakness, or another severe and sudden change.

Patients With Pacemakers or Electronic Implants

PEMF can interfere with pacemakers, implanted defibrillators, insulin pumps, cochlear implants, neurostimulators, and other electronic devices. Tell us the manufacturer and model of every implant before scheduling.

Bright red and near-infrared light can affect the eyes when protection, intensity, distance, or treatment time is wrong. Tell us about retinal disease, recent eye surgery, severe light sensitivity, glaucoma, or past eye symptoms during light treatment.

Patients Taking Photosensitizing Medicines or Supplements

Some medicines, supplements, and skin products increase sensitivity to light. Bring a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, lotions, creams, oils, and products used on the skin being treated.

Patients With Seizures or Neurologic Devices

Tell us about seizures, epilepsy, implanted brain or nerve stimulators, and previous reactions to pulsed light or electromagnetic devices. Your health and the device instructions determine whether treatment can proceed.

Patients Who Are Pregnant or Breastfeeding

Pregnancy and breastfeeding require added safety review for red light therapy and PEMF. Tell us if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, are trying to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding before scheduling.

Patients With Suspicious Skin Changes, Active Cancer Treatment, or Acute Illness

Tell us about suspicious skin changes, active cancer treatment, fever, infection, new swelling, unexplained bleeding, or severe pain. These findings can change when treatment begins and whether another doctor needs to be involved.

Questions About Red Light Therapy or PEMF?

Tell us where you hurt, which movements bring the pain back, and how your symptoms affect work, exercise, sleep, or daily activity. Tell us about pacemakers, other implants, eye conditions, seizures, pregnancy, and medicines that increase light sensitivity. Our team can explain how the treatments differ and help you prepare for your appointment.

What Do Red Light Therapy and PEMF Feel Like?

Red light therapy usually feels like bright light and mild warmth. Some sessions create little noticeable heat.

HUGO Professional PEMF can produce tapping, pulsing, tingling, or muscle contractions through the full-body mats. The sensation changes with the program and intensity.

Tell us immediately about eye discomfort, headache, dizziness, unexpected pain, numbness, or another sudden symptom.

Eye protection depends on the light source, intensity, treatment distance, body part, and device instructions. Bright red and near-infrared light can create eye discomfort or unsafe exposure when used incorrectly.

Tell us about retinal disease, glaucoma, recent eye surgery, severe light sensitivity, migraines triggered by light, or previous eye symptoms during treatment.

PEMF can interfere with pacemakers and other electronic implants. Patients with a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, insulin pump, cochlear implant, neurostimulator, or another electronic device need device-specific guidance before exposure.

Bring the manufacturer and model of every implant. Passive metal implants, such as joint replacements, can have separate rules from powered devices.

Some medicines, supplements, and skin products increase sensitivity to light. Examples include some antibiotics, acne medicines, diuretics, anti-inflammatory medicines, herbal products, and topical ingredients.

The actual risk depends on the medicine, dose, light exposure, and body part being treated. Bring a complete list of medicines, supplements, lotions, creams, oils, and products used on your skin.

Continue prescribed medicine unless the prescribing doctor tells you to change it.

Clinic and home devices can differ in wavelength, output, treatment surface, distance, timers, and safety controls.

At Health Builders, two PlatinumLED Pro panels are mounted above a treatment table. We position you according to the body part being treated and explain the exposure used during your appointment.

A home panel gives you control over timing and positioning. Bring the model and manual when you want our team to review a device you use at home.

The HOCATT Ozone Sauna setup includes HUGO Professional PEMF during a seated chamber appointment. The chamber also uses heat, steam, and an ozone environment around your body.

Standalone PEMF uses the dual-mat treatment table. You lie between two full-body mats connected to the HUGO Professional system.

The physical setup, body position, program, intensity, and complete appointment differ. We explain which appointment we recommend based on your health and treatment goal.
